Maake Kemoeatu was carted away to the locker room at the Carolina Panthers’ first training camp practice yesterday, and the diagnosis is definitely not in his favor. Kemoeatu, a tough defensive tackle and a very important piece to the Panthers’ defensive puzzle, snapped the Achilles’ tendon in his right foot while running a non-contact drill Monday morning, and it was later confirmed that the Achilles’ tendon was the pinpoint of the injury. As this injury takes several months to heal, Kemoeatu will likely be out of commission this entire season, though general manager Marty Hurney refused to say whether or not the team will place the defensive tackle on the injured reserve just yet.
While Maake Kemoeatu’s injury was the most serious seen yet at training camp, another Panther was absent from last night’s practice. Jon Beason, a middle linebacker for Carolina, also sat out the second practice of the day yesterday, succumbing to a hamstring injury he suffered in practice earlier that day. Defensive coordinator Ron Meeks insisted that Beason’s injury wasn’t serious, saying he’d be back on the playing field in no time. For Kemoeatu, however, the same can’t be said, and the Panthers will likely spend the next few weeks trying to sign a veteran defensive tackle to take his place this season.
