Panthers Want Delhomme, No Matter If Charlotte Doesn’t

March 26, 2009

Remember that time Jake Delhomme threw hand grenades instead of pro football passes and had five interceptions in a playoff game that took the Carolina Panthers down faster than the sinking Titanic? Wait - that was this year against the Arizona Cardinals, and some Carolina fans aren’t yet ready to forget it. Regardless of whether or not Panthers fans are willing to forgive Delhomme for having a bad game at an inopportune time (hey, it happens to the best of us, right?), the Panthers are nonetheless ready to move forward, making steps toward offering Jake Delhomme a contract extension with the team.

Jake Delhomme is in the final year of his current contract, which lays a whopping $11 million against the Panthers’ salary cap, and the team figures that by signing Delhomme an extension it could cut around half of that sum for the ’09 cap figure. While complications are imminent and nothing has been finalized yet, coach John Fox has confirmed once again that Delhomme will be the starting quarterback for the Panthers in the near future, though nothing is nailed down. Fox recently said, “There is no question we’ve got a commitment to Jake. Whether that comes to fruition with a contract (extension), I can’t say.” How many years does Delhomme have left in Charlotte? We’ll find out soon!
