The Carolina Panthers have already had one of their best years in franchise history, and the playoffs haven’t even ensued yet. This Carolina team has consistently been one of the top teams in the league throughout this season, and it’s time to give credit to some of the key moves that have gotten the Panthers to where they stand today. Marty Hurney, the Panthers general manager, has been one of the major assets to the team over the past few years, and the ’08-’09 season has been one that Hurney has had a big hand in shaping.
The Panthers have struck gold over the past year with strong drafting, and players such as first round pick Jonathan Stewart, third-rounder Charles Godfrey and the return of Muhsin Muhammad have all been thanks in part to Hurney, who has been named among a Top Ten list of top executive performers in the league by the NFL’s Vic Carucci. Hurney and Carolina head coach John Fox spent a great deal of time and effort in rebuilding the Panthers after a less-than stellar year last year, and this year’s stats have shown great improvement. For example, last year’s Panthers scraped the bottom of the league in points per game, averaging 16.7 (and the fourth lowest in the team’s history,) while this year the team has boosted that number to 25.9 points per game, ranked seventh in the NFL.
