Panthers Training Camp to be One Week Shorter

July 2, 2008

Today, we actually have some news about training camp.  This is a bit earlier than I expected training camp news to be coming down the pike, to be honest.  Generally schedules are released, then there is the basic banter about the schedules, and then things die down until about a week or so before camp, when everyone gets totally amped about the season (and even the preseason), and every article takes on an urgency they haven’t had since last season’s playoffs.  But today things are different.  We have this quite oddly-timed article detailing the fact that the Carolina Panthers spring training is one week shorter than usual this year.

The reason for th shortening of the camp is simple - the Panthers have trimmed the fat.  They have less players to train and therefore believe it will take less time to properly train them.  I love this idea for a few reasons.  First of all, it will give the entire Panthers camp a sense of urgency that they would not have had otherwise.  Second, the Panthers are acting as though they don’t need that extra week.  I like that confidence in this group.  The Panthers need to regain their Super Bowl swagger, and this could help them, for sure.

Panthers Bid Farewell to Another Scout

July 1, 2008

Still counting down the days until training camp?  It’s July now, at least, so you have that going for you.  I, for one, cannot wait for the next few weeks to pass mercifully, so that we can get to actual training camp news.  Heck, even just a couple of weeks from now we’ll be so inundated with training camp previews we won’t know what to do with ourselves, but until then we will have to get by with whatever story comes down the wire.  Today, the story says the Carolina Panthers lost yet another member of their scouting department.

This will be the third member of Carolina’s team of scouts to leave the Panthers this offseason, which is certainly not cause for alarm.  However, we can still take the time to take a bit of a closer look at this.  The Panthers have signed many new players this offseason, and you would think the scouts would have quite a bit to do with this.  Now, while it would seem the Panthers showed little interest in retaining their employees, perhaps a different perspective is in order.  Perhaps the scouts did such a good job that they garnered the attention of other teams willing to pay out the ear for their services.  If that’s the case, it bodes well for Carolina’s new-look team.
