Panthers May Select Mendenhall

April 15, 2008

According to this article out of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers may try to select running back Rashard Mendenhall with the 13th pick in the draft.  This would be a great pick-up for the Panthers, in my opinion.  While I’m not entirely sure the Panthers need a second running back to compliment DeAngelo Hall, many people close to the situation seem to believe that they will need a power back before the season begins.  I must simply question whether or not the Panthers actually need to use their first round draft pick to secure said power back.

The Panthers could use their first round pick to get a solid defensive rusher.  Running back is not their only need.  I must also point to the Bill Parcells mantra of “no running backs in the first round ever.”  I know the Tuna isn’t running the Panthers, but I do hear he knows a thing or two about building successful NFL teams, and with the bounty of running backs in this season’s draft, I believe the Panthers could get a truly elite defensive player in the first round and then pick up a stout complimentary running back later in the draft.
