Panthers Close to Deal with Cornerback

March 3, 2008

According to this report out of the Charlotte Observer, the Carolina Panthers are nearing a deal with Cleveland cornerback/kick returner Ricardo Colclough.  Colclough was a former second-round draft pick by the Steelers, who released him last season.  The Panthers tried to get the corner at that time, but Cleveland claimed him first off waivers.   Now that the Browns have bolstered their secondary in free agency and felt they no longer needed the the services of Colclough.  The Panthers, in dire need at many positions, picked up the promising cornerback early in free agency.

This continues the trend of Carolina making no big splashes in free agency so far, but still bolstering their problem areas with solid signings.  The Panthers have too many holes to fill to go after one big name and spend a ton of money on one player.  Rather, they have been very active on the free agent market so far, assessing the team’s needs and going after players they feel they can immediately integrate into their system.  If the Panthers continue to play it smart in free agency, they should be a much-improved team next year.
