According to this article out of ESPN.com, the Panthers need to start cutting ties with some of their older players. While veteran favorites like Mike Rucker and Dan Morgan definitely have the love of every Carolina Panthers fan, they are all past their primes. Keeping these men on the roster, according to Pat Yasinskas, was one of the main reasons the Panthers went 7-9 last year. If the Panthers want to reverse their fortunes, they will need to cut ties with some of their older players in favor of new blood. I’m not sure I fully agree with it, but I see where the author is coming from.
My main issue with this article is that it ignores the fact that the Panthers were actually having a decent season until Jake Delhomme fell injured. Now, while I do agree that the Panthers can no longer afford to hang on to sentimental favorites, I still maintain that throwing the blame for the Panthers’ failed season on their shoulders is unfair. The Panthers had an awful season after losing their starting QB because they signed the wrong backup. If they’d had someone to pick up the slack for Delhomme, perhaps we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
