It is officially official. Although I’ve been calling it for about a week (and even then I can’t take credit for having some kind of scoop - pretty much everyone predicted Fox would stay), the Carolina Panthers have finally officially announced the Head Coach John Fox and General Manager Marty Hurney will both be back with the team in the 2008 season. That season, however, will likely be the last season for both men if they are not able to turn the Carolina Panthers around and bring the team back to the winning ways they enjoyed earlier this decade.
I can’t tell you if this is a good decision or not. I know that I’m being paid to have opinions about things, but this one is just a bit too much of a conundrum. Yes, the Panthers have underperformed this season. Yes, it looked as though Julius Peppers gave up on his team. Yes, the David Carr signing was an absolute debacle. And yet, honestly, what coach can be expected to get the most out of a team that fielded four different quarterbacks in one season? Fox may deserve another year, but the microscope is going to fixed on him - and Hurney - all season long.
